Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need therapy?

There’s no “right” or “wrong” time to start therapy — it’s simply about recognising when you might need some extra support. You might consider counselling if you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or low, or if you’re finding it hard to cope with certain thoughts, emotions, or life changes.

Sometimes, people come to therapy because something specific has happened — a relationship breakdown, loss, or work stress. Other times, it’s more about wanting to understand yourself better, improve relationships, or make positive changes in your life.

If you’ve noticed that things feel heavier than usual, or that your usual coping strategies aren’t working as well, that’s often a sign that talking to someone could help. Therapy isn’t only for crises — it can also be a space for growth, self-reflection, and learning new ways to manage life’s challenges.

How do online sessions work?

Online sessions are simple and secure. We schedule a time that works for you, and I’ll provide a secure link for our video call. You’ll need a private space and a stable internet connection. Many clients find that online sessions make it easier to fit therapy into their busy lives.

What should I expect in my first counselling session?

The first session is really about getting to know each other. It’s a chance for you to share what’s brought you to counselling and what you hope to gain from it, and for me to explain how I work and answer any questions you may have.

We’ll talk about what’s been happening for you, explore your goals, and start to outline what our sessions might look like. You don’t have to have everything figured out — many people come to their first session unsure of where to start, and that’s completely okay.

It’s normal to feel a bit nervous before your first session. My aim is to create a safe, calm, and supportive space where you can speak openly and feel heard without judgment. By the end of the session, you’ll have a clearer sense of what counselling could offer and whether it feels like the right fit for you.

How long are sessions and how often should I attend?

The number and frequency of sessions really depend on your individual needs and goals. Some people find that just a few sessions help them gain clarity and direction, while others prefer ongoing support as they work through deeper or more complex issues.

We usually begin with weekly sessions to build momentum and understanding, and then adjust the frequency as we go along — sometimes moving to fortnightly or monthly check-ins. It’s a flexible process, guided by what feels most helpful for you at each stage of your journey.

I feel anxious about opening up in therapy — what if I can’t talk?

That’s a really common and completely understandable feeling. Many people feel anxious about opening up, especially at the beginning of counselling. You’re sharing personal thoughts and emotions — things that may have been held inside for a long time — and it’s natural to feel unsure or even vulnerable about doing that.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you start. We’ll go at your pace, and there’s no pressure to talk about anything you’re not ready to. Sometimes, just talking about feeling anxious or unsure can be a really helpful first step.

My role is to create a safe, calm, and non-judgmental space where you can begin to explore your thoughts and feelings in your own time. With trust and consistency, it often becomes easier to share what’s on your mind.

What is your approach to therapy?

I practise from an integrative perspective, combining several evidence-based models to meet your individual needs. My work draws on:

  • The Satir Model for family and self-esteem development

  • Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) and Focusing for understanding emotional patterns

  • CBT and Mindfulness for managing stress and anxious thoughts

  • Trauma-Informed Care to support healing safely and sensitively

Sessions are collaborative — I see therapy as a partnership where you set the pace and direction, while I walk alongside you, offering tools, reflection, and understanding.
